Brazil (3)1-1(2) Chile Last 16
Brazil edged out Chile in the cruelest possible way as they beat them on penalties. The win means Brazil will progress to the quarter finals of the World Cup.
The stadium was a sea of yellow as over 40,000 Brazil fans dawned upon the very little Chilean supporters.
The game in the first 90 minutes had been subdued by the format in which the game was carried out. Brazil would have all of the ball and Chile would hit them on a fast counter attacking break would could spark a good spell of play for them.
The first goal came on just 18 minutes when a ball into the back post had found David Luiz to take his time and bundle the ball into the back of the net. The hope had been with Brazil at this stage as they looked as if they could dominate the match.
However Chile who had impressed in this tournament did not give up their fight as a mid placed pass had found Alexis Sanchez in the box. The FC Barcelona player made no mistake as he cooly rolled the ball past Juilo Cesar and into the right hand corner.
The game stayed at 1-1 for the rest of the match including the gruelling 30 minutes of extra time.It was referee Howard Webb who blew the final whistle to decide that the game would go to penalties.
The penalty shoot out itself was very hard to watch as these sorts of game deciders are based on a pot of luck shot or save.
The penalties were poor in truth with Alexis Sanchez, Diaz and Pinalla all missed for Chile in the shoot out. For Brazil it was Willian and Hulk who missed.
Neymar had scored the fifth penalty for Brazil to make it 3-2 on the score line but it was up to Chile player Diaz to score to keep them in the World Cup.
Heartbreak had occurred as he's shot cannoned of the post and knocked Chile out of the World Cup.
