Greece (3)1-1(5) Costa Rica Last 16
Costa Rica progressed to the Quarter finals as they narrowly beat Greece via a penalty shoot out.
The game started off slowly with only one shot managed in the first 45 minutes although the game had a bit of reckless tackles providing a few yellow cards.
Greece had the best chance of the first half when Dimitrios Salpingidis saw his shot from point blank range saved by Costa Rica goalkeeper Keylor Navas. He made himself look big and maybe put off Salpingidis whilst shooting.
The first goal of the game came when the Costa Rica winger Christian Bolanos on the left hand side as he had seen his captain Bryan Ruiz on the edge of the Greece box. The pass had found him as he cooly rolled the ball into the right hand corner leaving Greece goalkeeper Orestis Karnezis still standing as he had no chance.
With 25 minutes to play Costa Rica were handed out their first red card of the tournament when Oscar Duarte was sent off for a second offence which resulted in a second yellow card. The yellow card occurred when Jose Holebas was fouled giving the referee no choice but to send him walking down the tunnel.
It was into the 90 minutes that Greece equalised as Theofanis Gekas had his back to goal. Gekas had shot at goal forcing the goalkeeper to parry the ball out to Sokratis Papastathopoulos as he was able to tap the ball into an empty net.
The game would go to penalties as the nervous fans awaited their second penalty shoot out in the the four round of 16 games so far.
Costa Rica were cool and collective in their penalties as they scored all five out of the five they took however it was Theofinas Gekas who saw his effort saved to give the power to Costa Rica at 4-3.
Michael Umana would take as he showed composer and a cool head to slot past the Greek keeper and send his country through to the quarter finals of the World Cup.
Man of the match was the Costa Rica goalkeeper Keylor Navas as he made some outstanding saves to keep his team in the match. He was brave and threw himself at anything for his team and that is why they are advancing. The penalty save from Navas to keep out Theofinas Gekas' penalty was fantastic as it was a save which he shouldn't have got by dived to the right getting a finger tip on the ball!
