Jones thrones United at the top

Manchester United make some key changes as Robin Van Persie starts on the bench with Rooney the lone man up front. Adnan Januzaj gets his champions league debut as Ashley Young also starts on the opposite wing.

Shakhtar Donetsk also make changes as Bernard is one player who loses his place as Adriano starts up front.

12 minutes into the match as Taison had threaded a ball through to Alex Teixeira who had Evans chasing him down on the left hand side. The Brazilian had tried to put the ball in the corner of the right hand post but his shot had gone an inch wide of the goal.
 

6 minutes later as the ball had found 18 year old Januzaj as the Champions League debutant had chested the ball and was able to chest it down and turn. At point blank range he had shot straight at Andriy Pyatov as he parried the ball away from goal.
 

37 minutes had gone as Ryan Giggs tried to clip a ball over the top to Young and he did get in front of the defender as Wayne Rooney had been right next to him with an open goal but the England international had tried to lob the ball over Pyatov and into the bottom left hand corner and so nearly did as the ball had gone a whisker wide saving Donetsk from which would be an undeserving score line.
 

At the half time whistle as Man United and Shakhtar Donetsk are deadlocked. 
 

Man United have almost played as the away side on the counter attack but have had some great chances to finish with Ashely Young really not proving anything in the first 45.
 

Shakhtar have been on the attack and look comfortable in position as the Brazilian attack has carved United open a couple of time in the first half a goal against them would have been undeserving as they have been the better side.
 

2 minutes after the restart when the Ukrainians had won a corner which Taison would take and he had as the ball had gone right through to Shakhtar centre back Yaroslav Rakitskiy as his shot from 10 yards had clipped the post on the right hand side as they come ever closer to breaking the deadlock.
 

59 minutes had past when a good interchange between the Manchester United team had got Rooney with his back to goal. The former Everton striker had turned a tried to chip Pyatov and very nearly did as the ball went just over the top of his bar.
 

8 minutes later when Manchester United had won a corner which substitute Robin Van Persie would take as the Man United fans echo around the ground singing his name. The ball had gone into the box as the Shakhtar defender had tried to clear but the ball had only fell to Phil Jones to volley straight down the middle and past Pyatov's hand to give United and David Moyes a much needed relief. Phil Jones scores his second goal of the season out of just six attempts on target.
 

At full time and Manchester United scrape a win after Phil Jones volley settles the win as Man United qualify top of the Group as Shakhtar are set for Europa league.
 

Man United attacked more in the second half and played a lot better than their opponents as Jones volley settled top spot.
 

Shakhtar were poor in the second half and lacked real intent from the attacking perspective as they face the Europa league.
 

Next up for Manchester United is an afternoon kick off against Aston Villa at Villa Park as they may look to kick off their season again.
