Manchester United have announced that Wayne Rooney will be the new Manchester United captain as the new season approaches.

Manager Louis Van Gaal confirmed this after the clubs pre season win against Valencia lat night with Darren Fletcher proudly becoming the vice captain.

Van Gaal said on Rooney becoming captain "Wayne has shown a great attitude... I believe he will put his heart and soul into his captaincy role."

Wayne Rooney is near his anniversary at United and has now successfully held us as a club ransom to 2 pay rises and a captaincy.

Although it is fully deserved the captaincy the pay rises I may certainly do not agree. That is in the history books now and I look forward to seeing Wayne Rooney lead our team to success.

Wayne Rooney on the captaincy role said "It is a huge honour [and] a role I will perform with great pride."

Since signing Rooney has grown and developed as a player. When Manchester United bought Rooney they had the idea of a long term success player and it has paid off well.

Another positive is Darren Fletcher being awarded the vice-captain role. This is a major boost that he is still a big part player at Old Trafford after he may have felt like the forgotten man at Old Trafford with the injury and virus battle looking to end his career.

Darren Fletcher said "Wayne and I have always worked well together and we will continue to work closely together in our new roles."

The decision to give the captains armband to Wayne Rooney I can't complain with at all as he is reaching his peak potential and has the influence to boost the ability of those around him.

The factor of Wayne Rooney is that he has been at the club so long and that is why he was given this prestigious armband over Robin Van Persie. You must remind RVP has only been at the club 2 years compared to Wayne Rooney's 10 years.
